A guaranteed victory on 3/4
In the past few weeks, I’ve received multiple emails both espousing the values of Barack Obama and encouraging me to vote for him. Well … I did vote for Obama: in the New York primary, way back on 2/5. In fact, many of the well-intentioned folk sending these emails also — ostensibly — voted Democratic on Super Tuesday; for Obama, or for Hillary Clinton, or for whomever else.
It remains to be seen who will represent the Democratic party in the general election — and for this reason, the results of today’s primaries (in Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas, and Vermont) are of great significance. But while Democrats — like myself — anxiously await the exit polls, it’s important to note one certain outcome:
Mike Huckabee’s gonna lose.
This is seen as such an inevitability that no one seems to care — but they should, and here’s why:
After today (barring the election of Ralph Nader, whom I do not believe majored in miracles), we can rest assured that the next president of the United States will be either — in no particular order — Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or John McCain. The Iraq war notwithstanding, this means our next president will:
- Believe in evolution;
- Support stem cell research; and
- Support campaign finance reform.
Is there still much to dislike about each of the presumptive candidates? Certainly. But won’t it be a nice step in the direction of rationality? Science? Secular humanism? Call it what you like: won’t that feel good?
We’ve sacrificed much over the past seven years, and with the final, ultimate humiliation of Mike Huckabee — and his crazy, Charlie Manson eyes — we’re at least assured of the above.
Vote for that, Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas, and Vermont, and we’re on the right path.
